In this assignment, you will work through one of the Jasper Woodbury episode/problems, Rescue at Boone’s Meadow.
- Download the Jasper video file. It is a Real Media file of about 77MB, which may take a while to download, but once you’ve got it on your computer you’ll be able to view and go to various points in the video quickly. Right-Click (Windows) or Control-Click (Mac) on the link and select “save link as” or “save downloaded file as” (depending on your browser). If you just click the link, you can view the video, but this probably won’t save the file on your computer for later. Jasper Video Link
- You may need Real Player to view the video. If you don’t have it already, download this free application:
- Go to the Real Player website: http://www.real.com
- Click on the FREE DOWNLOAD link and save the setup file to your computer.
- Run the setup file to install Real Player on your computer.
- Work through “The Rescue at Boone’s Meadow,” a 15-minute video with a story that includes opportunities to solve mathematics problems. You should watch the video and work on the main problem posed during the Rescue. Although it is fine to do it by yourself, working with a young person–a student or your own child, about age 10 or older–would be a fun and interesting way to do the problem. Another possibility is to find an adult partner to work on it with you–a fellow teacher or friend, for example. But be sure you DON’T work on it with someone who will take over and “DO” the problem. The point is to think and talk about what you are doing, not to get a solution as fast as possible. The Jasper episodes are intended for conceptual mathematics, as you will see during the rest of this unit. If you work on it alone, talk to yourself and give yourself time to think about what you’ve seen and heard, to imagine other viewpoints and ideas. You should set aside about an hour to view the video and work on the problem.
You may find it useful to watch the video twice–once without interruption and then again starting and stopping to take notes or replay segments.
There are many ways to solve the main problem given in the Boone’s Meadow video–students have come up with some very creative ideas. There are multiple possible solutions and their validity depends on the reasoning that accompanies them. So, don’t worry about getting “THE RIGHT ANSWER.” Worry instead about thinking through the problem, understanding what it takes for you to solve the problem, and what it might take for your students to solve it. Later in this unit, you will work on it with your study group, and we will share solutions in the whole class forum.
BE CREATIVE! Enjoy it, and find a partner to work with if you can.
